Skill Force conducted their annual celebrations evening for students on Tuesday 13th July at Oldway Mansion.
Mayor Nick Bye presented over 30 students with their award portfolios at the awards and celebration evening at Oldway Mansion. The aim of the awards evening is to enable students to celebrate their success with their families, friends and teachers.
Iain Mackay, Skill Force Devon Team Leader explained: "The ethos behind Skill Force is to motivate, build confidence and inspire pupils at GCSE level, at its core are the key skills of problem solving, working with others and improving learning and performance. The celebrations evening is a great chance to reflect on all that the students have achieved over the past two years. These award portfolios have proved very effective. Past students have come back to visit us to tell us how useful they have proved in interviews."
Skill Force is an educational charity comprising ex-forces personnel which operates in 40 teams across the UK, running training and accreditation for students on a two year programme developing vocational and life skills. The students typically complete a range of awards and qualifications including The Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award, St John Ambulance First Aid – Young Life Savers Award, ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness and Wider Key Skills. Results from the teams established nationally show a dramatic improvement in the numbers of school leavers going on to education, employment or training.
The Torbay Skill Force team work with staff and students at Brixham College, Torquay Community College and Westlands School. The partnerships have proved to be a tremendous success, working with young people to achieve their potential and become responsible members of the community.
