Military to Education

SkillForce is the trusted bridge for Service leavers and ex-Forces into a new career in education.

Military to Education is our new course being launched in the second half of 2014. The course gives the learner the skills, knowledge and understanding to prepare them for the mentoring and teaching professions.

It gives an insight into the roles and responsibilities of mentors and instructors when educating and developing young people.

Learners will develop the skills and knowledge they need to plan and deliver training, and to provide feedback to young people, in a way which supports and enhances each individual’s learning and character development. They will also learn how to embed different mentoring models by undertaking a number of supervised mentoring sessions.

On successful completion, learners will receive,

  • Qualifications (Level 3 Diploma in Mentoring in Alternative Education)
  • Experience (a 3 week placement with one of our teams across the country)
  • Recognition (we know how to work with ex-military and have 10 years’ experience of unlocking their skills and values)

“I’m finally feeling positive about the future. The programme has helped me find a purpose again in a time I thought I had no purpose. The qualifications I have gained have given me the edge in job applications ranging from youth worker to behavioural mentoring.”

Michael Day, SkillForce Military to Mentors Graduate, previously Corporal in the Royal Green Jackets, The Army.

Support from Help for Heroes

In addition, we are delighted that generous funding from Help for Heroes will go towards the training cost of 15  Wounded, Injured or Sick personnel on SkillForce’s Military to Education programme. This delivers a Level 3 Diploma in Mentoring and Developing Young People and is designed to give Service Leavers the skills needed for next steps in education.

This grant will also pay for a Taster Placement for up to 20 Wounded, Injured or Sick personnel considering a career in education. The programme will usually involve a placement with SkillForce in a school. More information can be found here and Help for Heroes.

“I have always had an interest in working with Children/young adults, so when I found out about the programme, I knew that it would be a great course to help kick start my career into education. The course has equipped me with the right skills and qualifications needed for a career in education, and I look forward to furthering my studies on the back of this programme.”

Track record of success

In the last two years nearly 200 Servicemen and women have completed the pilot to Military to Education called Military to Mentors. The programme was a four-week practical course which gave participants the core skills and experience to work in schools or with young people. Almost two thirds have now found employment working with young people.
