Ceremony Celebrates Benson Pupils’ Character Scheme Success

Published Tuesday 20 December 2016 in News

Benson primary schoolchildren have been congratulated for completing an education award scheme backed by HRH The Duke of Cambridge.

The SkillForce Junior Prince’s Award develops character, resilience and confidence, as well as teamwork and problem solving skills.

Aimed at 9 to 14-year-olds, the scheme is delivered for two hours a week in primary and secondary schools to equip children with the skills to succeed in education, life and future employment. Activities include teamwork challenges, community projects, first aid and outdoor pursuits.

Twenty-four pupils at Benson Church of England Primary School on Oxford Road, have just successfully completed the programme, which started in September. They were presented with their certificates at an awards ceremony at the school on December 8th.

Helen Crolla, Headteacher of Benson Church of England Primary School, says, “The programme has been a welcome addition to the curriculum that we offer. It has been wonderful to see children enjoying learning outdoors, co-operating with each other and gaining confidence. The school is offering the programme to all pupils in Key Stage 2 and exploring future projects for younger pupils.”

Instructor Chris Peacock, who joined SkillForce earlier this year, has worked with the Benson Primary School pupils using skills he gained from being in the Royal Air Force for 32 years.

He says, “It has been great to see the pupils develop and grow in different ways. What I like about SkillForce is that it focuses on practical life skills rather than academic ones, and that is having a really positive impact on the children.”

Ben Slade, Chief Executive, SkillForce, adds, “We work with schools to transform lives enabling children and young people to build character, self confidence and resilience, and I am delighted that pupils at Benson Primary School have successfully completed our Junior Prince’s Award programme.”

More than 4,000 school children nationally have completed the SkillForce Junior Prince’s Award, which receives funding from investment company Standard Life. For information about SkillForce’s programmes for schools call 01623 827626, or email us.
