FAQs
Q. Is SkillForce a boot-camp style intervention?
A. No.
Research and evaluation into this type of short-term programme has found that strict regimes have no long term impact on bad behaviour, especially outside of school.
The Sergeant Major shouting orders is an outdated stereotype. It is not what SkillForce is about.
Our Instructors aim to achieve positive change in young people’s lives by quickly establishing themselves as strong role models and securing the commitment of young people to achieve success in their lives.
Q. How do you apply discipline in the classroom?
A. Our Instructors set boundaries and treat students as young adults with clear expectations of acceptable behaviour. Feedback from teachers tells us that this approach has helped to improve most students’ behaviour overall.
Q. What is it that makes your people different?
A. Their Armed Forces background has given our Instructors life experiences that the majority of people will never have. They have faced unusual challenges and have travelled to some of the most remote places on earth. Many have returned to the communities where they grew up and have an understanding of the problems faced by their students. With their diverse experience, young people can relate to our Instructors and respect them.
Q. Does SkillForce recruit for the Armed Forces?
A. No.
Students are aware of Instructors’ military background and they will answer questions, when asked. However, great care is taken not to place an emphasis on their military experiences.
Of the total number of students who completed the SkillForce course in 2009, just under 3% choose to enter the Armed Forces.
